When it comes to listening to music nowadays you will realize that there are so many choices that it can be quite hard to decide what to listen to. No matter what genre you’re interested in if you want to support people of your locality or your identity the choices are nearly endless. If you are looking to support queer artists, you might want a selection of some of the best amongst some rather different genres to be able to explore all sorts of queer art and see all that’s available to you as a listener. Some of the names on this list might surprise you others not so much but you will of a great selection of wonderful artists that I’ve seen plenty of acclaim already.
Lil Nas X
the first artist on our list is someone who needs no introduction considering that he has topped charts multiple times over the past five years with various songs of various genres. Most people know him as the artist behind the collaborative project Old Town Road Which he produced alongside Billy Ray Cyrus and eventually many other country artists who decided to show support. One of the first and the few black and queer artists to top the charts in the country category of the Billboard in the United States. He taught the charts again with his songs Panini, Industry Baby, and Montero. Lil Nas X is a highly prolific gay artist with an incredible catalog of music growing similarly to his Internet presence and persona.
Freddie Mercury / Queen
Time for a throwback. Freddie Mercury is one of the first and biggest queer artists out there normally known for his world-renowned band Queen and the incredible contribution to music it had mercury is now also known as one if not the biggest gay artist in history so far the very least. Being in the public eye and facing the realities that most gay men were dealing with at the time of the tragic devastating aids crisis mercury would eventually become a victim of this pandemic. He left us with his incredible sense of empathy and the work he did to support the queer community and those who fought against aids but also a catalog of music that is still unparalleled.
SOPHIE
When it comes to discussing current queer artists one name is often mentioned with reverence and respect. We are of course talking about the artist and DJ Sophie Xeon also known simply as Sophie. Initially anonymous Sophia would eventually come out and reveal herself to be a Scottish transwoman. She would not only become one of the most well-known DJs in the world, but she would also create a massive space for herself and other queer artists within the mainstream of music. Mourned by collaborators such as Vince staples Charli XCX and Kim Petras Sophie sadly passed away after an accident at the young age of 34 years old in 2021.
Kim Petras
Contrary to popular belief you can’t always find out if you are a trans with this quiz that you can find online, or by adding an enlightening experience many people know from a very young age. Such as the case of this young artist named Kim Petras. While she released two albums independently, she truly became a worldwide sensation by collaborating with Sam Smith on his billboard-topping it Unholy. Reaching the top of the charts would make Petras become the first solo transgender artist to occupy such a spot on the Billboard. She would also eventually become the first openly trans artist to win a prestigious Grammy Award. With a little more than a decade-long career, she has already achieved a lot and we can only expect for her to keep breaking more records.
Orville Peck
Orville Peck is one of those singer-songwriters that often fall under the radar despite constantly releasing quality projects I am making a lasting impression on those who have the chance to come into contact with his music or his persona. Peck brings the full force of queer art into the cultural legacy of the country. Carrying western guitar tunes with his deep and rich voice does managed to build himself a massive following as well as a prestigious place amongst the current country seen both in the United States and abroad.
Lady Gaga
Another artist who needs no introduction we are of course talking about Lady Gaga. One of the few and rare artists who were brave enough to come out as bisexual in the late 2000s Lady Gaga carried the same torch that many considered Madonna to be carrying in the 1980s and 1990s. She opened many doors for up-and-coming queer artists by platforming them and also giving them voices, especially against critiques that were still quite harsh in the late 2000s and early 2010. Many consider that the face of pop music, as it is today, wouldn’t be nearly as open to queer artists as it would be without Lady Gaga.
